Minor Problems

there are a few minor probles that  encountered whilst creating my e-book
these include:
  • the inability to copy and paste images from the internet onto a page in powerpoint. I really don't know why, but it just wouldn't work at times
  • extremely slow internet speeds that severly limited the amount of work that i could get done each lesson
  • hyperlinks that weren't working, but I fixed that problem by deletingthe hyperlink and creating a new one

Tech Nonsense

http://www.technonsense.com/ is a very useful website if you want to know anything about technology and the news that surrounds these devices

How Stuff Works

I have found the website www.howstuffworks.com to be extremely valuable while constructing my e-book as it gives an in-depth explanation of how pretty much everything works. The website also uses extremely resourcefull images and GIFs to explain the chosen topic. I would highly reccomend this website for anyone who is curious to know what makes things 'tick.'

Phone Advice

Imagine you work as an assistant in a mobile phone shop. A mother comes into your shop wanting to buy a smart phone for her daughter. Her mother is not very “tech savvy” and needs some concepts and features explained. Below are some of her questions, do your best to provide meaningful answers in simple terms;

1.       “My daughter insists that her phone be Wifi capable? What does this mean? Why does she need it?”
If you daughter's phone is Wifi capable, she will be able to use Wifi internet . She would need this because it will be much cheaper than using the phone company's internet.

2.       The mother says “She wants the camera in the phone to be at least 5 Meg thingys, what does this mean? Does she need it?”
The mega pixels of a camera refers to the resolution, meaning the clearness of the image. The more mega pixels, the clearer the image, so, she would need this camera if she wants very clear photos, even though it may cost a little extra.

3.       “My daughter wants a phone with a capacitive touch screen. They seem more expensive, what advantages do they offer over other types of touch screens?”
Capacitive touch screens only respond to materials which are conductive. This means that there will be no accidental commands made to the device when she is cleaning the screen, or putting the phone into her pocket. Other types of screens can be commanded by anything that touches it. This is a downside because the phone could accidentally be triggered to call someone without your knowledge.

4.       “Are all phone as smart as one another? What is the smartest phone at the moment and why?”
No, not all phones are as smart as one another, and the smartest at the moment would have to be the iPhone 4 because it has a much faster data speed, phone calls connect faster and the phone can become a hot spot, meaning that it can provide internet for other devices.

5.       “She wants to take lots of video and photos. How do I know which phone can store the most videos and photos?”
The phone which can store the most videos and photos will be the one with the most amount of gigabytes. More gigabytes means more storage for her videos and photos.

6.       “She says she wants to be able to buys apps. What are apps? What sort of useful apps cold she access? What types of phones can buy and use apps?”
Apps is just short for applications. These can be games, books, tv guides, references..... the list goes on. These are all usefull in our everyday lives, from seeing when the next episode of Doctor Who is on, to doing research for assessments. iPhones and Android phones are compatible with apps.

Bits and Bytes

What is a Digit
a digit is a number
"normal” counting numbers used in everyday life are based on what sequence of numbers?
Where does the word bit originate from?
The word 'bit' was derived from the term binary digit (0 and 1).
Binary numbers don’t use base 10. What base do they use? What digits are available in base 2?
Examine the tables below

Handheld Computing

What are MID and UMPC devices? How do they differ. List at least three examples of both types of devices & include images.
 MID means mobile internet devices
UMPC means Ultra-mobile PC

and answer the following question:

What are the differences between a Notebook handheld computing device and a Netbook handheld computing device?
  • A notebook has a much larger memory than a netbook
  • A notebook has 2 to 4 hours battery while the netbook has up to 10 hours battery because it uses less demanding progams.

  •
Describe the design & features of the Apple Ipad then discuss how it compares with a Netbook.
Of the three handheld devices - Notebook, netbook & Ipad – which one would suit your needs and why?

If I was looking for a UMPC device with a screen size of 10 in or less, which would you recommend? Justify your choice.

View some of the videos at this link http://www.umpcportal.com/ .How would you envisage students five years from now using one of these devices at school. Select any UMPC / MID device that you have researched that would meet a students needs, justify your choice.

Evidence of research into multimedia presentation Tools

Google Docs
·         Versatility – what media does it allow me to use (text, images, video)?
Google docs presentation allows me to insert text, image, drawing, video, tables and shapes
·         Ease of use – how friendly is the user interface for the designers (you)? How easy is it to add components to my presentation? How friendly is the user interface for the user, can visitors find what they need on your presentation? Are you able to create a menu system or is the user forced to work through your presentation in a linear predetermined fashion?

i found the user interface to be much the same as microsoft powerpoint in may ways, so i found it very simple to use. Visitiors can easily find what they may be looking for on my presentation but there are no hyperlinks available to navigate through the information
·         Collaboration – how well does the online tool allow me to work with my partner? Can we both work on the presentation at the same time?
i do not have a partner for this assessment, so this section does not apply

The CPU

What is the function of the CPU?
The CPU is a microprocessor which can be called the brain of your computer

What was the name of the first CPU?
the name of the first CPU was - Intell 4004 that was introduced in 1971

Referring to the graph on page 2 of the article, describe how the speed of CPU’s has changed. The speed of CPU's has changed dramatically from 2 MHz in 1974 to 3.6 GHz in 2004

 What does MIPS measure?
MIPS measure the 'millions of instructions per second'

Most modern PC’s use what are called dual core processors. It is often stated that such processors improve multitasking. Research what is a dual core processor, what is multitasking and how do the two work together.
Dual core processors are the equivilant of having two CPU's
Multi tasking is when the computer is running tow or more programs at the same time.

Broadband research

What is broadband?
Broadband is signals over a wide range of frequencies in high capacity telecommunications especially used for access to the Internet.

Outline the methods of delivery of broadband (wireless, cable, ADSL and fibre)
Identify the speed of each method.
WIRELESS

100Mbit/s

CABLE
30 Mbps
ADSL
56Kbps

FIBRE OPTIC
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
WIRELESS
Advantages
  • Wifi hot spots
  • You can take your Internet connection anywhere
  • High speed Internet
  • No cables that would clutter your workspace
  • Cheaper to set up than wired broadband
  • Connecting a multiple number of computers to the same router without the computers interfering with each other
  • You can also connect phones and ipods to the wireless network
Disadvantages
  • Limited availability
  • Security issues
  • Technical knowledge is needed to operate wireless Internet
  • Other people can 'steal' your Internet if you don't have it properly secured
  • The Internet speed gets slower with the further away you are from the router
CABLE
Advantages
  • Can make phone calls over the Internet
  • You can have deals that let you have cable television and cable Internet
Disadvantages
  • Not available in all areas
  • Degraded Internet speed
  • Decreased security
ADSL
Advantages
  • quicker than dial-up
  • High speed connection
  • Use of the phone line while connected
  • Fixed monthly cost
  • Good value for money
  • No extra wiring; ADSL uses the existing phone line
  • Lower pings in online games
  • No more dropped connections
Disadvantages

  • Service not available everywhere

  • ADSL works better when closer to the ISP's central office

  • Variable speeds depending upon time of the day

  • Faster download than upload

  • Line testing takes a long time

  • Home user is contended at 50:1, meaning that you might be sharing your 512Kbps with 49 other people, giving you 10Kbps.

  • FIBRE OPTIC
    Advantages
    • Extra security
    • Much faster than other broadband servers
    • Phonetic power applications (sending electricity through the fiber optic cables instead of just light wavelengths)
    • Extremely high bandwidth
    • Resistance to electromagnetic interference
    • Early detection of cable damage
    Disadvantages
    •  Difficult to install
    • Wildlife damage
    • Broken easily
    • Are not available everywhere
Give examples of broadband providers and identify the costs.
Big pond - from $9.95 per month
Optus - from $79.99 per month
Dodo - from $59.80 per month with home phone

The Federal Government is thinking of rolling out a national broadband network (The NBN). Research the NBN and find out:

What method of delivery it will use
The NBN will use fiber optic cables for 93% of premises and the remaining 7% will get fixed wireless or satelite connections.

     the expected speed
100 megabits per second or more for the fibre optic cables
12 megabits per second for the fixed wireless and satellite connections
    the expected costs
The expected price for 12 Mbps downstream/ 1 Mbps upstream is to be around $24 per month plus GST.
The expected price for 100 Mbps is around $38 per month plus GST

Do you think Australians should invest in The NBN? Justify your answer.
I believe that Australians should invest in the NBN. This is because it will create a much faster and much more reliable internet connection which will later be adapted to deliver television or to have a video consultation with your doctor.

There will be additional variable charges depending on their size coverage and coustomer base.

    The World Of Multimedia

Where do you commonly use multimedia in your daily life, list as many examples as you can.
In class, at home, on the bus.

What multimedia device or service would you find it hardest to be without? Discuss.
The Computer. Without a computer, school researching would become much more difficult, as we would have to venture to the library every time, and it would take much longer to do as much research in a hour with books, rather than the internet. Computers also create many different ways in which we can easily and quickly communicate around the world.

The video on future directions (third video) has already to some extent come true. What multimedia technologies displayed in this video are already commonly used?

Do you see any advantages/disadvantages to the use of such multimedia technology?
